Reading
At St Joseph’s, we value the importance of reading and the impact it has on all areas of the curriculum. Teaching pupils to read is one of our most important duties. We aim to teach our pupils how to decode, derive meaning and find joy and fulfilment from the written word. Our reading curriculum begins with Read Write Inc Phonics and shared reading in the Early Years and Year 1. From Year 2, pupils continue with phonetic development, shared reading and begin to focus on reading fluency. From Year 3 onwards, our reading curriculum moves towards vocabulary instruction, spelling and word derivation, fluency practice, extended reading and close reading.
We have developed our teaching of reading with a rich variety of texts to develop a diverse reading diet for our pupils. In addition to our reading lessons, we have shared reading in every class, for our pupils to enjoy a shared text and develop listening comprehension.
